Freedom camping is welcomed at Lake Whakamaru Reserve. A permit is required. There is a huge stretch of grass along the river edge as well as a toilet block, BBQ area and boat ramp.

The Whakamaru Reserve is situated on the edge of Lake Whakamaru with a boat ramp located at the north end and a small beach at the south end of the area.

A stop on the Waikato River Trails, the is one of the South Waikato’s designated camping areas and a gorgeous spot to visit and relax.
